Defense Philipp Kuntke, opening pilot

WTC, Leeuwarden, The Netherlands - 26 april 2013

On April 26, 2013, Philipp Kuntke defended his thesis ‘Nutrient and energy recovery from urine’ .

After the defense we will celebrate the official opening of the pilot for innovative treatment of urine. The pilot is located at Wetterskip Fryslân, but the opening ceremony will also be in the WTC. (update and picture will follow soon)

ValueFromUrine is a new European FP7 funded project, coordinated by Wetsus. Within this demonstration project Wetterskip Fryslân and the City of Leeuwarden together with the ValueFromUrine partners Desah, Magneto, Abengoa water, Mast Carbon, Tudor and University of Minho, will investigate the recovery of phosphate and ammonia from urine.
A test container has been put near the Wetterskip building in Leeuwarden.

Phosphate and ammonia are the base components of valuable fertilizers for agriculture. At the heart of the innovative “ValueFromUrine” concept lays a Bio-Electrochemical System which recovers energy and ammonia from urine. In current treatment processes the urine is “diluted” with other waste water and a lot of energy is needed to remove the ammonia. The aim of this demonstration project is to evaluate the technology developed in the Wetsus laboratories under real world conditions.
